One day awareness programme on "Measures for Environmental protection" was given to the school students at Thiru. V.C.V Govt Higher Secondary School, Vellakinar on 21st March, 2019. The programme was funded was UGC (CE) Scheme.
During this awareness programme some of the UG and PG students from the Zoology Department, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore went to the school to interact with the students about environmental awareness and the protection measures that need to be followed. The program was conducted on 21st March which was also 'International Forestry Day'. The programme aptly followed the theme for the forest day in 2019 which was ' Forest and education'. The Aim of this meet was to educate the young students the problems that have risen because of the societal exploitation of nature and also to inform them regarding the preventive measures that can be followed.
The interaction with the students was lively and the different kinds of pollution was briefly explained to them in the native tongue by Dr. S. Binu Kumari, Assistant Professor in Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. After the explanation about the different environmental damaging problems, a presentation was carried out for the students to view the real picture depiction. The pictures were collected from news articles and reports from the Government organisations. The idea was to show the students the damage caused to their surrounding environment by showing them local pictures of in and around Coimbatore.
The programme came to end with a short speech from the Head Master of the school and then as a token of gratitude and also to advertise the ban of plastic use , Dr. S. Binu Kumari gifted the students and teachers with cloth bag, reminding them the importance of 3 R's in life –REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE.
