Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter and PG and Research Department of Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore jointly organized a National Seminar on Bioprospecting and Conservation of Bioresourses on 9th February 2018.
Dr. R. Jeyaraj, HOD of Zoology welcomed the gathering and highlighted the various departmental activities. Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal presided over the function and he emphasized the importance of traditional herbal medicine. Inaugural address was given by Dr. A. A. Mohamed Hatha,and in his speech he emphasized the importance of Marine natural products and their conservation strategies.
The main target of this seminar was the systematic search and development of new sources of chemical compounds, genes, micro-organisms, macro-organisms, and other valuable products from nature. It paves way for exploration and research on indigenous knowledge related to the utilization and management of biological resources.
Four invited speakers arranged for this National Seminar and they spoke on various topics related with Bioprospecting and Conservation of Bioresources
1.Prof. I. S. Bright Singh - “Reproductive hormone gene silencing in shrimp as means of induced maturation and domestication”
2.Dr. A. A. Mohamed Hatha - “Bioprospecting of marine bacteria for novel marine natural products – strategies for exploration”
3. Dr. P. R. Arun - “Minimizing Environmental Impacts; Lessons from Biodiversity and Butterflies”
4.Dr. S. Achiraman - “Ficus religiosa - From Global Warming to Metabolic Disorders”
At the end Dr. S. Binu Kumari, Assistant Professor in Zoology and Organizing Secretary of this programme proposed the vote of thanks. Large number of delegates, scholars and students from our institution and from other colleges & universities participated and benefited.
