The Department of Tamil was started in the year 1973. The Department offers Tamil as a Part-I Language subject for the disciplines of Arts, Basic Sciences, Biological Sciences, Commerce, Management and computer science & related disciplines. The Department is committed to the growth of the students into well-moulded individuals who can take lead roles in any classroom, academics, literary and cultural phases. The faculty members are wholeheartedly involved in stimulating passion towards literary, developing competence, fostering creativity and infusing human values among the students. The curriculum provides sufficient opportunities to gain values for life and motivate the students to take competitive examinations. The syllabus for all the semesters is framed in such a way to improve the literary knowledge in a well expanded manner and oratorical skill of the students by intensifying the confidence level among them.

The Department provides multiple skill based opportunities to the students to excel in various fields of media such as television, radio and newspaper.

Unique Features

The Department stands unique in having prepared Question Bank Series for all the semesters from the academic year 2003-2004 onwards.

  • Various workshops on creativity and verse-writing, documentaries and short-films based on their syllabus are being conducted for the benefit of the students.

Research Activities

M.Phil and PhD research programmes in Tamil were introduced in the academic year 1987 and showing a remarkable progress over the years. The Department is well equipped with the state-of-the-art research facilities to strive for excellence in research and extension activities and furnished with computers & related aids for research scholars and staff members. In addition to the College Library, the Department has its own library with nearly collection of 500 books on various categories for the benefit of the research scholars and students.

We carry out research based on the needs of our society and benefiting the same. The Department has received various Major and Minor research projects from number of funding agencies on various aspects of our research area.

The staff members have participated, presented and published papers and research articles on current topics in various Seminars, Workshops and Conferences both at the State National and International Levels. As of today, the Department staff have published 24 books and are further involved in publishing more and continue to be subject experts at the University Level.

UGC funded Research Schemes

The staff members of our Department have successfully conducted many research programmes (Major and Minor) with the assistance of the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. Besides, they have also conducted Conferences, Workshops at the State as well as National Levels with funds secured from the UGC and Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore and Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai.

  • The Department has proposed to implement an ambitious plan of providing modern equipments and techniques to equip the students for real-time situations in public speaking.

  • Plan to start the Diploma course in Tamil Language, Epigraphy and manuscripts with the UGC funding.
