- The competence of the department over the years has been recognized by the Central and State Government. As a hall mark, the distinction of the department is that, it was vested with various grants such as UGC, DBT and DST for strengthening the infrastructural facilities and for the development of academic and technical expertise of the department. The detailed break-up of the grants are as follows:
- UGC special Grant - Rs.4,58,825 /-
- DBT Star College Fund (2012 - 2017) - Rs. 9,00,000/-
- University Grants Commission (CPE) fund (2011 - 2016) - Rs. 11,42,565/-
- DST-FIST fund (2013- 2016) - Rs.9,40,800/-
- UGC Additional Assistance grant - Rs. 554128/ -
- The Department has successfully completed 14 major and 14 Minor research projects funded by various funding agencies like UGC, MoENF, CSIR, TNSCST, BSI, etc for the total outlay of around Rs. 1 Crore.
- The active research work has resulted in 648 publications in various reputed journals with good impact factor.
- The faculty members of the department have been adjudged with various awards and honors like Tamil Nadu State Environmental award for valuable contributions in terms of developing biostrategy to control forest fire spread and Professor M.L.Khorana IJPS award for the publication in reputed journal.
- The highlighting features of the Department is that two books entitled flora of Kannur district and Medicinal & other Economic plants of shola understoreys of Nilgiris, the Western Ghats were published.
- Many popular articles are written in dailies about medicinal plants, environmental issues and biodiversity conservation to make awareness about these bioresources among public.
- A sizable number of our alumni have turned out into entrepreneurs with scientific background. It is very much delightful to note that one of our notable alumni is serving as a scientific officer in the Department of plant quarantine and storage.
- By dynamic and active performance of faculty members, Research scholars and students, the Department has won various meritorious awards as detailed below:
- The Department (both UG and PG) is honoured with meritorious awards for securing 100% result in two consequent years, 2009 - 2010 and 2010-2011.
- For the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, Department has been adjudged as the Best Department for its overall performance.
- For the academic year 2013-2014, Department has been adjudged as the Best Research Department, Overall Best Department and Best Department in academic Performance for its overall performance.
- The Department (PG) is honoured with meritorious awards for securing 100% result for the year 2013-2014.
