- சங்க இலக்கியம் முதல் தற்கால இலக்கியம் வரை பாடத்திட்டத்தில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளதால் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் மொத்த பரப்பையும் படிக்கும் வாய்ப்பு.
- இக்கால இலக்கியங்களின் தோற்றுவாயை அறிந்துகொண்டு படைப்புகளைப் படைக்க ஊக்குவித்தல்.
- சுற்றுச்சூழல் விழிப்புணா்வை ஏற்படுத்துதல்.
- சமகால வாழ்வியல் சிக்கல்களை எதிர்கொள்வதற்கான வழிமுறைகளை அறிதல்.

Program Outcomes
- The Syllabus is framed according to the current scenario.
- The Curriculum traces the social reforms through literature and create awareness on ecological issues.
- Exposure to moral values and ethics followed worldwide through the medium of most ancient language Tamil.
- Successful completion of the program results in the error free usage of the language both in speaking and writing
- Introduction to the linguistic, cultural and historical background of all genres of Tamil literature so as to explore the background of each literary form.
- Training in basic communication skills such as writing official/ formal letters is given in addition to translation.
- Enhancement of creativity among students in the area of Short story, Novel, Drama and Prose by interactive session with living authors of contemporary literature.
- Equipped students to gain variety of opportunities in the field of Teaching, Translation, Journalism, Massmedia, Tourism, etc.,

The MA Tamil Literature program describe accomplishments that graduates are expected to attain within five to seven years after graduation

The Department is well equipped with the state-of-the-art research facilities to strive for excellence in research and extension activities and furnished with computers & related aids for research scholars and staff members.

As of today, the Department staff have published more than 10 books and are further involved in publishing more and continue to be subject experts, Resource Persons at the College Level.
