Genesis

Taking into consideration the vast demand in the society, job market and self-employment the college is offering  B.Sc. Psychology course from the academic year (2020 - 2021).

Salient Features
  • Psychology is a multi-faceted scientific study of the mind, behavior and attitude. It includes many subfields of studies in areas such as human development, mental health, social behavior, clinical and cognitive process.

  • The subject matter is preparatory to a career in psychology either in basic research and teaching or in any number of professional applications to various human problems.

  • Our undergraduate major in Psychology are designed to provide students with a broad exposure to the behavioral sciences with a focus on the statistical and research tools used in contemporary psychological research.

  • A psychology major may prove useful to those planning other professional careers such as medicine, law, education, business, social work or counseling, as well as those who seek a broad cultural background in the behavioral sciences.

Thrust Areas
  • Biological Studies the physiological causes of behavior, they examine the relationship of the brain and nervous system with behavior, and related areas such as cognitive processes and emotions.

  • Clinical Psychologists in charge of analyzing, identifying, treating, and preventing mental disorders and issues.

  • Cognitive Study the human thought process by examining how people process and store info, especially in regards to subjects like language, decision-making, deductive reasoning, and problem-solving. 

  • Counseling Focus on the emotional, social, educational, and developmental behavior on people and use that research to encourage and facilitate more successful personal and interpersonal behavior.

  • Developmental Study and understand human social and emotional growth and development over the course of time.

  • Educational Studying and understanding how people are capable of learning in educational settings, the efficacy of certain educational methods, and the effectiveness of the institutional process.

  • Experimental Study both human and nonhumans with respect to their abilities to detect what is happening in a particular environment and to acquire and maintain responses to what is happening.

  • Human Factors Study human capabilities and limitations with the goal of developing safer, more efficient, and more dependable products or technologies for consumers

  • Industrial-Organizational Study employees, the workplace environment, and organizational structure. Tasked with finding out how to make the organization more productive and efficient.

  • Personality Looks at how a patient's personality affects the way they deal with the world around them.

Milestones
  • Department of Psychology took an initiative of Entry Level Mapping for all I Year UG Students. This entry level mapping provides an insightful look into the various psychological and demographic factors affecting first-year UG students. 

     

  • Psychology Association & Samrakshna Counselling Centre was inaugurated in the year 2023, by Dr. B. Selvaraj, Controller of Examinations, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Psychology, Government Arts College, Coimbatore. 

     

  • In the year 2021, Psychology Laboratory was established in the department.
